TWO BILLS IN CONGRESS OBVIOUSLY VIOLATE FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Two bills that obviously are violations of freedom of speech have been introduced in Congress, S. 720 and HR 1697.  I am shocked that so many people in congress have co-sponsored these bills, both Republicans and Democrats. What happened to their oath 'to support and defend the Constitution.

The bill  S 270, prohibits any U.S. person engaged interstate or foreign commerce from supporting:
  • any request to impose any boycott by a foreign country against a country which is friendly to the United States and which is not itself the object of any form of boycott pursuant to United States law or regulation, or
  • any boycott fostered or imposed by any international governmental organization against Israel or any request by any international governmental organization to impose such a boycott.
The bill amends the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 to include as a reason for the Export-Import Bank to deny credit applications for the export of goods and services between the United States and foreign countries, opposition to policies and actions that are politically motivated and are intended to penalize or otherwise limit commercial relations specifically with citizens or residents of Israel, entities organized under the laws of Israel, or the Government of Israel.

The other bill HR1697, is similar if not identical.

The bill prohibits U.S. persons engaged in interstate or foreign commerce from:
  • requesting the imposition of any boycott by a foreign country against a country which is friendly to the United States; or supporting any boycott fostered or imposed by an international organization, or
  • requesting imposition of any such boycott, against Israel.
The bill amends the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 to include as a reason for the Export-Import Bank to deny credit applications for the export of goods and services between the United States and foreign countries, opposition to policies and actions that are politically motivated and are intended to penalize or otherwise limit commercial relations specifically with citizens or residents of Israel, entities organized under the laws of Israel, or the Government of Israel . . ."

There are both civil and criminal penalties for violations.
