TIH: Colombia abolishes Slavery

May 21, 1851, the South American country of Colombia abolished slavery. For a list of when other countries abolished it see this link.http://www.forumbiodiversity.com/showthread.php?t=31009

Notice the long list of countries that beat the "land of the free and the home of the brave," to the punch.  Notice that most of Western Europe and the Western Hemisphere got around to it before us. Even Mexico beat the U.S. to abolition.  Shameful!

  1. Shameful, indeed. Yet slavery is still practiced throughout the world today, particularly in Africa and Asia. Latest estimate I could find put the number around 27 million, mostly in forced labor and the sex trades.

  2. j.r.: Thanks for the post. The dark side of human nature is all too evident. What some humans can still do to others is shameful. Even in countries that have formally abolished it, it is often tolerated.

  3. Slavery is driven by a sociopathy not only found in unenlightened cultures, but often in domestically abusive situations as well. Doesn't matter what veneer of beneficent frosting covers said practice, enslavement is fundamentally evil at its core.

Thanks! Agreed. "Slavery" can take many forms. For those who love liberty, only murder is a more serious crime.

  5. "This is a world of compensations; and he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave. Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it.
