I agree with Thomas DiLorenzo's perspective in his book Hamilton's Curse. Again it was federal interference that contributed to any deadlocks that progessive's claim was the reason we needed the 17th Amendment. Personally I believe this amendment subverted our country's basic constituional design essentially making it unconstitutional from a constructive view. It'd be like congress deciding we needed a return to monarchial rule. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a constitution and its tenth amendment guarantee. We'll just wing it like the British did for centuries.
