3 NOPD officers convicted in Henry Glover shooting case
In the post-Katrina hell, part of which was created by NOPD, Henry Glover, an unarmed man, was shot and killed by a NOPD officer. There was absolutely no justification for the shooting. Officers attempted to cover it up by burning Glover's body in a car and keeping quiet. In federal court, the officer who shot Glover was convicted of manslaughter. Two other officers were convicted of participating in the cover up. Two officers were acquitted.

As a frequent visitor to the city of New Orleans, I have noticed that it is fashionable for folks who don't live there and have spent very little time there to have answers to questions that the folks in N.O. are not asking. N.O.P.D officers don't hurt people who behave well.
ReplyDeleteThe verdicts were rendered by jurors from New Orleans. The prosecutors live in New Orleans or the general area. Not too long ago a jury convicted other NOPD officers of covering up another NOPD atrocity (I believe there's a blog on it below.) The leading local newspaper helped break both stories and has been writing about the need to clean up NOPD. New Orleans NAACP and other local groups have been complaining about NOPD for years. The last American peace officer to be sentenced to death (after conviction by a New Orleans jury) was from NOPD. I suspect these juries and residents are in a better position to judge NOPD than a tourist.
ReplyDeleteThe Mafia did a great job keeping order in Las Vegas at one time. Did corruption and murder reign supreme? You Betcha! But the tourists were happy.
ReplyDeleteGiven a choice between reliance on the NOPD or the NAACP for my safety in New Orleans, I'll take the NOPD, thank you.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would prefer NOPD for protection, but that's not the issue and is a red-herring. The fact is that NOPD, New Orleans, and Louisiana have a long history or brutality and corruption and few politicians with the courage to clean it up. The last American peace officer sentenced to death row for duty-related activity was from NOPD.
ReplyDeleteThe Constitution and rule of law apply everywhere, including New Orleans.
